Rhodope Mountain Villages - Day Trip from Plovdiv with Traditional Lunch

Visiting Plovdiv, Bulgaria? Don't miss out on experiencing authentic Rhodope Mountain villages.

Only 40 kilometers from Plovdiv, you enter a completely different world. Transported back in time to a mountain village that is as authentic as it was 200 years ago, you go on a leisurely stroll through little passages connecting the stone-roofed houses, zigzagging up and down the hills of one of the most picturesque villages in the Rhodope Mountians - Kosovo.

There are only 7 permanent residents living in the village throughout the year, and if one happens to stumble upon them, they will surely greet you with famous Rhodopian hospitality.

Inevitably, your pace slows. Even the village pub (kruchma) reminds you that life flows differently here. The name above the pub door reads "Carefree Life," a life built around only the essentials: food, shelter and community.

We are still not sure whether is it the fresh air, or the pure soil and water here, but something makes the food so delicious, and you feel like all your senses have awakened to experience this small Bulgarian village in the Rhodope Mountains.

Our hosts from Kosovo Houses have a story to tell, how after more than 20 years working in Venezuela they returned to their native Bulgaria and made this small village their home. "We fell in love with the village," they say smiling while asking if you would like to try kachamak, a traditional Bulgarian dish made from cornmeal, feta cheese, butter and paprika, or perhaps you would like another glass of Mavrud wine...There is no rush, we've come here to enjoy.
