UNESCO Red Wall Nature Reserve, Bachkovo Monastery and Asen's Fortress | Day Tour from Plovdiv

UNESCO Red Wall Reserve, Bachkovo Monastery & Asen's Fortress | Day Tour From Plovdiv

Join us on this full-of-surprises and discoveries tour to Bachkovo Monastery and the UNESCO Red Wall Nature Reserve (the largest biosphere reserve in the Rhodope Mountains). In the afternoon visit the medieval Asen's Fortress located on top of a high rocky ridge

Only 35 minutes away from Plovdiv (27km), we will go on a hike alongside a small river through picturesque woodland, fields with running mountain spring fountains (where you can fill up your water bottles!) all the way to a small hollow in the rocks, a sacred place where the “miraculous” icon of the Virgin Mary reappeared in the beginning of the 17th century, after being hidden for more than 200 years during the Ottoman rule of Bulgaria.

We will walk to a beautiful waterfall and chapel where you can drink holy water from a sacred spring and enjoy the marvellous beauty of the UNESCO Red Wall Man and Biosphere Reserve.

Returning form the hike we will visit the 11th century monastery complex of Bachkovo, founded in 1083- that is one of the most sacred places in Bulgarian history.  In the monastery’s church you will see the icon of the Virgin Mary from 1310 that was found in the rocks and which, according to the legend and the monks of the monastery, can work miracles.

A visit to Bachkovo is never complete without stopping at the local sellers’ market that features an array of artisanal products including some tasty foods and sweets.

This exciting tour will end with a visit to the medieval Asen's Fortress. From here a short walk on an ancient Roman road will take us to a hidden chapel (one of the 60 chapels in the area, Asenovgrad, often called the "little Jerusalem", the city with the highest density of churches, monasteries and chapels in Bulgaria).
