Hiking in the Rhodope Mountains > Kom Peak and Uhlovitsa Cave Hiking Trip

Kom Peak and Uhlovitsa Cave | Hiking Trip in the Rhodope Mountains

Kom Peak (1592 m. a.s.l.) in the Rhodope Mountains (not to be mistaken with Kom peak in the Balkan Mountains) is a peak located 4 km north of Gudevitsa village in the Western Rhodope Mountains- about 54 km from Pamporovo, 131 km from Plovdiv.

The peak is reached through a hiking trail that crosses mountain meadows, lush forests of oak, beech and pine trees in one of the most beautiful and pristine nature areas of the Rhodope Mountains near the source of the Arda River.

The 7 km (4.35 miles) hike takes about 3 and half hours to complete. It is a moderate hike with a few steep sections and a total of about 500 meters elevation gain. The effort to hike the peak is rewarded with stunning panoramic views over the Bulgarian and Greek Rhodope Mountains and the nearby villages nested among the mountain hills.

After descending the peak, the trip continues with an optional visit to Agushevi Konatsi in Mogilitsa village, a 19th century Ottoman mansion declared as a national monument of art and culture in 1964. The mansion operates as a museum (there is a 5 BGN entry fee).

After ascending the highest peak in the area, it is time to explore the underworld. The impressive Uhlovitsa Cave is more than 3.5 million years old. Out of its total 460 meters length, 330 meters are accessible by tourists. Its interior is very rich in cave formations - stalactites, stalagmites, pillars, dendrites and the spectacular flowstone formation known as the Icefall at its end.

The cave is reached by a steep path (800 m long ) and 190 metal stairs. Last visit is at 4:00 PM. The temperature inside the cave is constant 10-11 C.
