2-Day Hiking Trip in the Rhodope Mountians

Belintash-Karadzhov Rock-Haiduktah-Red Wall Peak (1500 m.a.s.l)

Some of the most epic trails in the West Rhodope Mountains combined in just two days hiking trip!

Day 1

The hiking adventure begins at Mostovo village located 50 km south-east of Plovdiv. From the village, 5 km hiking trail takes us to Karadzhov Rock. The trail is in a good condition, elevation gain about 500 m.

The goal for the first part of the day is to visit Karadzhov Rock and Haiduktash - two natural rock formations of spectacular proportions and appearance located at an altitude between 1100-1500 m. a.s.l.

The wilderness of the area combined with a low population in the surrounding area benefits the region's rich flora and fauna. Rare bird species are nesting here - black stork, golden eagle, long-legged buzzard, Egyptian vulture, peregrine falcon and many more birds of prey can be spotted from the top of Karadzhov Rock and Haiduktash. The area around the rock complexes is inhabited all year round by chamois, brown bear, wild cat, wolf, fox, pine marten, and boar.

To get to the top of the Karadzhov Rock plateau we will have to use a small part wooden, part metal ladder. The rock phenomenon is certain to leave you speechless. A large boulder is stuck between two cliff faces and the path up passes right underneath. The boulder literally hangs over your head as you climb the ladder.

We will explore the plateau, which is a protected nature landmark and an ancient Thracian shrine, and marvel at the incredible 360-degree views of the Rhodope Mountains. We may even see eagles or other birds of prey.

Next to visit is Haiduktash. From Karadzhov Rock, we will descend to the second rock plateau, also a protected nature site. The top of the plateau is truly unique: a meadow full of herbs, ferns, trees and bushes, and wonderful rock formations.

Our last spot for the day is timed perfectly: sunset on Belintash, the most popular of the ancient rock shrines. Tired and happy we will enjoy the magnificent sunset before checking into our comfortable hotel for much deserved rest and dinner.

Summary of  day 1:

Total walking time: about 7 hours
Total hike length: 14 km
Total ascent gain: 510 m
Distance from Plovdiv: 50 km, about 1 hr 20 min drive time (mountain road)

Day 2

Today we will visit the highest part of the UNESCO Red Wall Reserve and the tallest peak in the area Red Wall (1500 m. a.s.l.) after which the UNESCO Reserve is named. The ascents will be more gradual than yesterday as we will begin hiking at an altitude of 123o m.

Our exploration of the ridge includes the Red Wall Peak (1500m), Dobrostanski Biser Cave (open for visits only on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) and the Pope Peak.
